    A 74 year old gentleman presented with a temporary, sudden onset loss of vision in his right eye whilst on holiday in Spain. The episode lasted about 2-3 mins. Upon further inquiry he claimed he felt pins and needles in his left hand and felt some weakness in his left arm for approximately half an hour. On examination his vision was normal and there was no evidence of any focal neurological deficit. He smokes 5 cigarettes a day. He received a carotid doppler scan which revealed a 75% stenosis in his right common carotid artery and a 40% stenosis on the left.
